I began learning French when I was thirty-two years old. People often say that adults learn languages more slowly than children. This may be true, but it is not the whole story.

Adults bring things to language learning that children do not have. Wider vocabulary in their own language. A sense of grammatical structure. The ability to study deliberately.

My motivation was simple: I had accepted a job that required regular trips to Paris, and I wanted to function there with some degree of competence rather than helplessness.

After six months of evening classes and daily practice, I arrived in Paris for the first time with my new language. It was imperfect. I made constant errors. But I could order food, ask for directions, and follow the general shape of a conversation.

Three years later, I am what is called conversational. Not fluent, but comfortable. The gaps in my knowledge no longer bother me as they once did.

The most valuable thing I learned was not French. It was that I was capable of learning something difficult when I truly committed to it.
