It was raining heavily as I came out of the office. I had an umbrella, but when I opened it, one of the spokes broke and the whole thing folded sideways. It was completely useless.
I stood under the small roof of the entrance for a moment, looking at the rain and thinking. I had a twenty-minute walk to the bus stop.
A colleague, Helen, came out behind me. She had a large sturdy umbrella. Without hesitating, she said: Come on, we can share.
So we walked together under her umbrella. We had to walk quite close, which was a little awkward because we did not know each other very well. But we talked and laughed about various things at work, and by the time we reached the bus stop, I felt I knew her much better.
The rain had stopped by then. She folded her umbrella with a satisfied snap.
Sometimes, I thought, things breaking at the right moment is a kind of luck.
