At the edge of our town, there is an old stone bridge over the river. It was built three hundred years ago and is still used by pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge is wide enough for two people to pass easily. The stone is worn smooth in the middle from centuries of footsteps. On each side there is a low wall where people often stop to look at the river.
I cross the bridge almost every day on my way to the office. It takes about four minutes, but I often stop in the middle and lean on the wall and look at the water.
In spring, the river is high and fast after the winter rains. In summer, it drops and you can see the stones on the bottom. Ducks nest in the reeds near the bank.
I sometimes think about how many people have stopped at exactly this spot, looking at exactly this river. Three hundred years of ordinary mornings.
It is a simple thought, but it gives me a sense of proportion that the rest of the day rarely provides.
