At the edge of our village, there was an old house that had been empty for many years. It stood alone on a small hill, surrounded by tall trees and a broken stone wall. The local children believed it was haunted, and nobody ever went near it after dark.
One autumn afternoon, my friend Tom and I decided to explore it. We had always been curious about the strange building, and we wanted to prove that we were not afraid. The front gate was rusty and made a loud noise when we pushed it open.
As we walked up the path, dead leaves crunched under our feet. The house looked even bigger up close. Most of the windows were broken, and ivy covered the grey walls. The wooden door was slightly open, as if someone was waiting for us inside.
We stepped into a large hall. Everything was covered in dust, and the air smelled old and damp. There was a broken piano in the corner and an enormous staircase leading to the upper floors. Suddenly, we heard a noise above us. We both froze.
"Did you hear that?" Tom whispered. My heart was beating fast. We slowly climbed the stairs, trying not to make a sound. The noise came from a room at the end of the corridor.
When we opened the door, we could not believe our eyes. It was not a ghost at all. A family of owls had made their nest in the old fireplace. They looked at us with wide, surprised eyes before flying out through a broken window.
We started to laugh, partly because we felt silly and partly because we were relieved. There was nothing frightening about the house after all. It was simply old and forgotten.
Before we left, we promised each other that we would tell the other children the truth. The haunted house was just a home for birds. However, I must admit that, even today, I sometimes wonder what other secrets that old building might still be hiding.
