It had been raining since early morning. Mark stood at the window of his flat and looked at the grey street below. He had planned to go cycling, but the weather had other ideas.
He made himself a large cup of coffee and sat down at the kitchen table. On the chair next to him was a book he had been meaning to read for months. He picked it up, opened it at the first page, and began to read.
By midday he was completely absorbed in the story. It was a novel about a young woman who travelled across South America on her own. The descriptions of the landscapes and the people she met were so vivid that Mark almost forgot he was sitting in a small flat in an English city.
In the afternoon, his phone rang. It was his sister, calling from Glasgow. They had not spoken for a few weeks, and they talked for over an hour. She had news: she was expecting her first child in the spring. Mark was delighted.
After the call, he felt the need for some fresh air, even in the rain. He put on his coat and walked to the café around the corner. He ordered a slice of cake and a tea, and sat watching people hurry past outside with their umbrellas.
By the time he got home, the rain had finally stopped. The street was wet and shining under the street lights. Mark smiled to himself. It had turned out to be a rather good day after all.
