Every Saturday morning, Paul spent three hours at the local food bank. He had started volunteering there two years earlier, almost by accident. A friend had asked him to help out for just one week, and somehow he had never stopped.
The work was straightforward. He helped sort donations, stack shelves, and pack bags of food for families in need. It was physical work, and by midday he was always tired. But it was also deeply satisfying in a way that his regular office job rarely was.
He got to know the regular visitors over time. There was Mrs. Okafor, a cheerful woman who always brought her two small children. There was the quiet young man who came alone every week and never made eye contact. And there was Frank, an elderly man who had been using the food bank since it opened and always had a joke ready.
One morning, a new family arrived. A mother with three children, clearly anxious and unsure of the process. Paul went over and explained everything calmly and gently. He helped them choose what they needed and carried the bags to their car.
As they were leaving, the eldest child, a girl of about eight, turned back and said very seriously: "Thank you for helping us." Paul nodded and said it was no problem at all.
On the drive home, he thought about that small moment. It cost him nothing. And yet, for that family, it had clearly mattered. He decided he would be there again next Saturday.
