I failed my driving test four times before passing. I am not telling you this to seem relatable. I am telling you because those four failures taught me more than the eventual success.
The first failure made me angry. I had been confident, and the examiner''s calm list of errors felt unfair.
The second made me anxious. Maybe I simply was not able to do this.
The third made me methodical. I booked extra lessons specifically targeting my weak areas. I asked my instructor to be harder on me. I practised until the manoeuvres felt automatic.
The fourth made me philosophical. I had done everything right. I simply panicked at a crucial moment. There are some things you cannot practise into certainty.
The fifth test, I passed.
What I learned was not how to drive. What I learned was how to respond to failure without it changing my view of myself. That lesson has been more useful than anything.
