For two years, I had been thinking about leaving my job. It was a good job in many respects: stable, well-paid, respected. But I was no longer learning, and I felt the same way every Monday morning.
I discussed it with my partner many times. She was supportive but careful. She asked me practical questions: What would I do instead? Did we have enough savings? Had I explored other options within the same company?
These were the right questions. They forced me to be specific rather than just dissatisfied.
It took six more months before I felt ready. I had a plan. I had savings. I had researched the field I wanted to move into and spoken to people who worked in it.
I resigned on a Tuesday morning. My manager was surprised but kind. My colleagues wished me well.
The transition was harder than I expected. But six months later, working in a new environment on new problems, I felt a version of myself that had been absent for years.
Timing a change well is as important as deciding to change at all.
