The wall at the end of our garden has needed attention for two years. A section of it had crumbled and the bricks were slowly separating.
I had been meaning to fix it but kept postponing. Brickwork seemed complicated and I was not confident in my abilities.
Last October, my neighbour offered to help. He had done brickwork before and said it was not as difficult as people imagined.
We spent a Sunday afternoon on it. He showed me how to mix the mortar to the right consistency and how to apply it evenly. We removed the loose bricks, cleaned the surfaces, and rebuilt the section.
The work was satisfying in a way that most of my weekday work is not. It was visible and tangible. At the end of the afternoon, there was something concrete to point to.
My neighbour said: this will last fifty years if the mortar is good.
I find that idea pleasing. A small piece of work that will outlast both of us.
