I am not normally awake at five in the morning. But several times over the past year, insomnia or an early flight has taken me out into the city at that hour, and each time I have been struck by what a different place it is.
The streets are not empty. They are differently populated. Delivery drivers, street cleaners, bakers, nurses finishing night shifts: the infrastructure of daily life, visible in a way it is not at nine o''clock.
The light is particular. Especially in winter, when the sky is still dark but beginning to pale at the edges. Streetlights have a different quality against a lightening sky than against full darkness.
The noise is also different. Birdsong is audible in a city that during the day drowns it entirely. The sound of individual vehicles rather than traffic as an undifferentiated roar.
I have come to find these early-morning hours unexpectedly beautiful. Not pleasant, exactly. But possessed of a quality that the full-light hours lack: a sense that you are seeing something true about a place when its performance has not yet begun.
