The Unreliable Narrator

Every account of experience is also an act of selection, and selection is never innocent. We choose what to include, what to emphasise, what to treat as background and what as foreground. We tell stories about ourselves constantly — to others, and to ourselves — and these stories are never transcripts. They are arguments.

The concept of the unreliable narrator entered literary criticism in the 1960s, applied to fictional first-person voices whose accounts the reader is invited to treat with suspicion. Holden Caulfield misrepresents his situation. Stevens in The Remains of the Day systematically avoids acknowledging what he most needs to confront. The gap between what the narrator says and what the reader understands is where the meaning lives.

What makes this literary concept interesting is that it describes something universal. There are no reliable narrators of our own lives. Memory is reconstructive, not archival. We do not retrieve the past so much as rebuild it each time we need it, and in rebuilding we revise. Research in cognitive psychology has demonstrated repeatedly that confident memories — the ones we would stake our reputations on — can be entirely fabricated.

This is not a reason for nihilism about the self or about truth. It is, however, a reason for caution. It suggests that the most honest position is not to claim certainty about one's own past experience, but to hold it somewhat loosely — to recognise that what feels like memory may be interpretation, and that what feels like fact may be narrative.

The writers who have understood this best are not necessarily the most experimental. They are often the ones who write with the most precision about hesitation — who build into their prose a resistance to their own conclusions. That resistance is a form of intellectual integrity that no amount of stylistic confidence can substitute for.
