Every decision about where to look is also a decision about what to ignore. This seems obvious, but its implications are considerable. In an environment designed to compete for attention — which is, increasingly, the environment in which most people in wealthy countries spend most of their waking hours — the question of how attention is allocated becomes a political as much as a personal question.

The philosopher Simone Weil wrote about attention as a form of love — a sustained, receptive orientation toward another person or object that does not impose itself but waits to receive what is actually there. This quality of attention she considered rare and difficult and morally significant. It required the suspension of one's own projects long enough to genuinely encounter something external to them.

What she described is almost the opposite of the attentional mode encouraged by contemporary media environments. The scroll, the notification, the algorithmically curated feed — these are not designed for receptive attention. They are designed to produce reactive attention: immediate, involuntary, episodic. The difference between these two kinds of attention is not merely quantitative. It is qualitative. Different cognitive and emotional faculties are engaged.

There is now substantial evidence that extended engagement with reactive attentional environments does something to the capacity for sustained concentration. The evidence is contested in its details, but the general direction is not seriously disputed. Practices of deep reading, of listening without interruption, of sitting with a problem long enough to genuinely understand it — these become harder.

What is most worth recovering may not be specific practices but a prior question: what is attention for? If it has a purpose beyond its own capture, then the environment that structures it becomes something that can be evaluated, and perhaps refused. That, at least, is a beginning.
