The wilderness was not always an ideal. For most of human history, it was something to be overcome — hostile terrain that threatened survival and resisted settlement. The valorisation of wild nature as beautiful, restorative, and morally significant is a relatively recent development in Western culture, associated with Romanticism and with the particular anxieties of industrialisation.
Wordsworth walking in the Lake District, Thoreau at Walden Pond, Muir in the Sierra Nevada — these figures belong to a cultural tradition that located authentic experience in proximity to nature and inauthenticity in the city. The tradition has been enormously productive, both aesthetically and politically. It generated the conservation movement, the national park system, and a body of nature writing that constitutes one of the more distinctive contributions of Anglo-American literature.
It has also been criticised, often persuasively. The historian William Cronon argued that the ideal of wilderness encodes a nostalgia for a pre-human Eden that never existed and that systematically erases the indigenous peoples who inhabited and shaped the landscapes designated as wild. The wilderness park, in this reading, is not a preservation of nature but a particular cultural construction of it, made possible by the displacement of people who had lived in those places for millennia.
This critique does not dissolve the value of wild landscapes or of the experiences they offer. What it suggests is that those experiences come with a history, and that the history matters. The feeling of solitude in a national park is real. So is the set of social choices that produced the conditions for that feeling. Holding both in view at the same time is uncomfortable, and probably necessary.
