What the Climate Asks of Us

The climate crisis is the most demanding ethical situation humans have collectively faced, not primarily because of its scale — though the scale is enormous — but because of its temporal structure. The people who will bear the greatest costs are not the people whose choices most determine the outcome. Future generations, and people in low-income countries who have contributed least to cumulative emissions, are most exposed to the worst effects of warming. The people with the greatest capacity to act are those who have benefited most from the systems that produced the problem.

This structure — which philosophers call an issue of intergenerational and international justice — is genuinely difficult, and not merely politically. It challenges the frameworks within which ethical reasoning has typically operated: individual agents, contemporaneous relationships, calculable costs and benefits. Climate ethics requires thinking across timescales that exceed normal human planning horizons, about probabilities and risks rather than certainties, and in terms of collective rather than individual action.

There are several positions one can take in response to this difficulty. One is that it is essentially insoluble at the level of ethics and must be addressed at the level of institutional design — that individual obligations are secondary to getting the incentive structures right. Another is that individual obligations remain real even when institutions fail to support them, and that acting well in circumstances where the system is broken is both possible and required.

What seems indefensible is the position that the difficulty of the ethical questions excuses inattention to them. The climate crisis is, among many other things, an invitation to think about what we owe each other across time — a question that was always important and is now urgent.
