Every generation rewrites history, not because the past changes but because the questions we bring to it do. The events remain fixed; what varies is their significance — what they are taken to explain, what they are connected to, whose perspective is treated as central. These are not arbitrary choices. They reflect the concerns of the present, projected backward onto the evidence available from the past.
This is sometimes taken as a reason for scepticism about historical knowledge — if every account is perspectival, if every narrative selects and emphasises, perhaps no account can be more accurate than any other. But this does not follow. The fact that all maps involve projection does not mean that all maps are equally accurate. Some historical accounts are better than others — more consistent with the evidence, more attentive to its limits, more transparent about their own assumptions. The perspectival character of history is a reason for vigilance, not for relativism.
What changes most dramatically across historical periods is not the evidence but the sense of what needs to be explained. The history of the Atlantic slave trade was written very differently when its victims were not considered subjects of historical interest than it is now that they are. The evidence was largely the same. The question of whose experience mattered had changed.
This means that historical knowledge is genuinely cumulative, even though it does not accumulate in a straight line. We know more about the medieval peasantry than historians of a century ago did, because we have learned to ask questions that make peasant lives historically legible. We may know less than historians of a century from now will, about things we do not yet know we do not know.
The historian's craft — reading evidence against its grain, contextualising documents in the conditions that produced them, tracing connections across scales — is among the more demanding intellectual practices available. It is also among the more necessary, for a culture that wishes to understand how it came to be what it is.
