Failure is among the most common human experiences and among the least adequately theorised. The dominant discourse around failure in contemporary culture — particularly in entrepreneurial and self-help contexts — has converged on a single thesis: that failure is a learning opportunity, a necessary step on the path to success, a gift in disguise. This thesis is not wrong, exactly. Failure can produce learning. But the reduction of failure to its instrumental value — what you can extract from it for future use — is itself a kind of failure to understand it.
Some failures are simply losses. The project that does not succeed, the relationship that ends, the capacity that is not regained after illness — these leave behind not only lessons but absences. The honest response to them is not to immediately locate the upside but to acknowledge the loss, which has a reality independent of what it teaches. The refusal to dwell — the imperative to learn from failure and move on — can be a way of not mourning what is genuinely gone.
There is also a social dimension to failure that the individualising discourse obscures. Whether a failure is recoverable — whether it becomes a story one can tell later with equanimity — depends enormously on one's social position. For people with economic cushioning, social networks, and access to second chances, a failure is often genuinely instructive. For people without these resources, the same failure can be catastrophic and permanent. The valorisation of failure as productive experience is a perspective from a position of safety.
What a more honest account of failure would include is the range of its forms: the instructive failure that does become the foundation for something better, the simple loss that needs to be grieved rather than leveraged, and the structural failure that is not a personal experience at all but a consequence of a system that systematically denies recovery to some while offering it to others. All three are real. Collapsing them into the first category is convenient but not accurate.
