On June 24th 2026, Venezuela was struck by two massive earthquakes in quick succession — the first measuring 7.2 in magnitude and the second, just 39 seconds later, measuring 7.5. Scientists describe this as a seismic doublet: an extremely rare geological event in which two large earthquakes strike the same area within a very short time. The timing — a national holiday — may have reduced the death toll, as many offices and schools were closed. Nevertheless, the final death toll has exceeded 235, with more than 4,300 people injured.
The earthquakes have struck a country already in a profound state of crisis. Venezuela has been experiencing a severe economic collapse for more than a decade, marked by hyperinflation, shortages of food and medicine, and the mass emigration of millions of citizens. The earthquake has now added a humanitarian emergency to an already desperate situation.
Several governments and international organisations quickly offered assistance. Rescue teams from neighbouring countries arrived within hours, and international aid organisations began mobilising. The Venezuelan government declared a national emergency and requested support from the United Nations.
The earthquake has highlighted the urgent need for investment in seismic preparedness across Latin America. Venezuela's crumbling infrastructure — the result of years of economic mismanagement and under-investment — meant that buildings that might have survived elsewhere collapsed in this event. Rebuilding will take years, and the country will need sustained international support to recover.
