A STRATEGIC DEAL

Walmart is paying one point four billion dollars to purchase Vibe.co, an advertising-technology firm. It is the retail giant's largest acquisition since 2024 and represents a major bet on the growing world of "retail media" — the rapidly expanding business of helping brands reach consumers as they shop online and in stores.

WHAT VIBE.CO DOES

Vibe.co is a connected-television advertising firm. Its technology helps brands buy advertising space in streaming services and smart TVs with the precision and data-driven targeting that the digital advertising industry has perfected. By owning the platform directly, Walmart will be able to offer its suppliers something that few other retailers can: full-funnel advertising that links what consumers see on their screens with what they buy in stores.

WHY IT MATTERS

The acquisition reflects a broader shift in retail. Margins on physical goods are thin and falling; margins on advertising can be enormous. Amazon discovered this years ago and has built one of the world's largest advertising businesses on top of its retail platform. Walmart is now playing catch-up — and the Vibe.co deal is a clear signal that it intends to compete seriously.

THE COMPETITION

The acquisition puts Walmart in more direct competition with Amazon. Both companies now sell groceries, electronics, advertising space, cloud computing services, and entertainment. The next frontier, increasingly, is the ability to combine data from across all of these areas into a single, predictive view of the consumer.

KEY VOCABULARY

Acquisition — purchase of one company by another. Ad-tech — advertising technology. Retail media — advertising sold by retailers. Full-funnel — covering every stage of the customer journey. Margin — difference between cost and sale price. Targeting — directing ads at specific audiences.

QUESTION

Why is Walmart investing so heavily in advertising rather than in shops? Is the ability to predict consumer behaviour a good thing or a worrying one?
