A MAJOR RESTRUCTURING

Oracle, the American database and cloud software company, eliminated approximately twenty-one thousand jobs over the past year as part of a far-reaching restructuring designed to refocus the business on artificial intelligence. The cuts represent roughly fifteen per cent of the company's global workforce — one of the largest reductions in its history.

THE STRATEGY

The message from Oracle's leadership is clear: traditional enterprise software is no longer the future. The company is shifting capital and talent towards AI infrastructure — particularly the data centres needed to train and run large AI models. Oracle has signed major deals to provide computing power to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, and to several other AI laboratories.

A BROADER PATTERN

Oracle is not alone. Across the technology sector, companies are cutting jobs in legacy areas while hiring aggressively in AI. The total number of layoffs across Big Tech in the past year has been substantial — yet stock prices have risen, because investors believe the redirected capital will produce higher returns in the AI era.

THE HUMAN COST

For the twenty-one thousand Oracle employees affected, the strategic logic is little comfort. Many of those losing their jobs are experienced engineers who built and maintained the systems on which thousands of corporations still depend. Re-skilling them for AI roles is possible in theory — but in practice, the transition is rarely smooth.

A QUESTION OF TIMING

Whether Oracle's gamble pays off will depend on whether AI demand continues to grow at its current explosive pace. Some analysts believe the spending boom will plateau within two or three years. Others see no end in sight. The truth, as so often in technology, will probably lie somewhere in between.

KEY VOCABULARY

QUESTION

Is it ethical to lay off thousands of employees while pouring money into new technology? What responsibility do large corporations have for the workers they displace?
