THE DISCOVERY

In May 2026, scientists announced that measurements taken from mine boreholes in Ontario, Canada, had revealed significant quantities of naturally occurring hydrogen gas being produced by ancient underground rocks. The discovery adds to a growing body of evidence that geological hydrogen — hydrogen produced by natural processes deep within the Earth — is far more widespread than previously believed, and could potentially be exploited as a clean energy source.

HOW IT FORMS

Natural hydrogen is produced by a process called serpentinisation, in which water reacts with iron-rich rocks at depth, releasing hydrogen gas. The process has been known about for decades, but was long considered too diffuse and unpredictable to be commercially useful. New exploration techniques and a better understanding of the geological conditions that favour hydrogen accumulation are changing that assessment.

THE ENERGY POTENTIAL

Hydrogen is seen by many energy analysts as a crucial component of the transition away from fossil fuels, particularly for applications — such as heavy industry, shipping and aviation — where battery-powered electrification is difficult or impossible. Currently, most commercial hydrogen is produced by splitting methane, a process that generates significant CO2 emissions. Natural geological hydrogen, if it can be extracted at scale, would be genuinely zero-emission.

CAUTION IS WARRANTED

Energy experts urge caution about premature excitement. The gap between a promising geological discovery and a commercially viable energy source is large. Many questions remain about the scale of accessible deposits, the technical challenges of extraction, and whether geological hydrogen production is truly sustainable over the long term. The history of energy is littered with discoveries that promised revolution and delivered evolution.
