Colombia has elected a new president from the far right. This is a very big change for the country.
For the past few years, Colombia was governed by Gustavo Petro, the country's first left-wing president. Petro tried to make big changes: social reforms, protection of the environment and what he called "total peace" — a plan to negotiate with all armed groups at the same time.
Many Colombians criticised Petro's government. They said that security got worse in some regions. They said the economy did not improve enough. Some felt his policies were too radical.
The new president won by promising something very different. He has said he will be much tougher on armed groups and will probably change or cancel the peace deals that Petro negotiated. In foreign policy, he wants closer ties with the United States and is much more critical of Venezuela and Cuba.
This result is part of a bigger trend in Latin America. In recent years, several countries have moved from left-wing to right-wing governments, or the other way around. The political mood in the region keeps changing.
Colombia now faces a new chapter. The challenges are enormous: violence, poverty, coca production, migration. It remains to be seen whether the new government will be able to address them effectively.
