Written in 1962, “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” is one of Bob Dylan’s most ambitious early songs. Built as a series of questions and answers between a parent and a child, it pours out a flood of strange and powerful images, and it warns that something dark is coming.
The song is structured like an old ballad: a voice asks a young traveller where he has been and what he has seen, and the traveller answers with lists of astonishing, dreamlike pictures.
